Learning Built Around Your Child
We observe how children play, communicate, create, and solve problems. Those observations help us plan learning experiences that connect with each child’s interests, abilities, and upcoming developmental milestones.
At Rise N Shine Childcare, every child is welcomed, respected, and encouraged to grow at their own pace. We combine loving care, purposeful play, guided learning, and dependable routines in a warm home-based childcare environment.

Activities are shaped around each child’s interests, abilities, and developmental progress.
Children from different cultures, backgrounds, languages, and abilities are welcomed.
Children are guided through choices, redirection, clear expectations, and problem-solving.
Families are kept informed and welcomed into the childcare environment.
Children learn best when they feel safe, loved, and understood. At Rise N Shine, we take time to learn about each child’s personality, interests, family, home language, culture, strengths, and developmental needs.
Our goal is to create an environment where children feel secure enough to explore, confident enough to express themselves, and supported enough to develop at their own pace.
We welcome families of different cultures, religions, races, languages, abilities, and backgrounds. Children with disabilities and special healthcare needs are also invited to participate fully in our program.
Every child develops differently. That is why our environment, learning materials, activities, and guidance are adjusted to reflect the children currently in our care.
We observe how children play, communicate, create, and solve problems. Those observations help us plan learning experiences that connect with each child’s interests, abilities, and upcoming developmental milestones.
Children are given opportunities to explore, make choices, and express themselves independently. Teacher-guided activities provide additional structure when children are learning a new skill or trying something unfamiliar.
We use choices, redirection, visual cues, clear expectations, reflection, and problem-solving to guide behavior. We do not use physical discipline or punishment.
Toys, books, art materials, blocks, and other learning resources are placed where children can see them, make choices, and return them with increasing independence.
Materials are rotated based on children’s interests, developmental levels, skills, and engagement. This helps children remain curious, creative, and excited to participate.
Children build knowledge through play, conversation, movement, creativity, sensory exploration, and meaningful interactions with adults and other children.
From a baby’s earliest discoveries to a school-age child’s growing independence, Rise N Shine provides age-appropriate care and learning experiences that support the whole child.
Infant and Toddler Care

There is no screen time for children under two years old.
Preschool Care
Preschool children participate in engaging activities that help build confidence, communication, creativity, independence, and school-readiness skills.

These experiences are guided by the Maryland Early Learning Standards.
School-Age Care

Rise N Shine uses the Mother Goose curriculum to create a nurturing and stimulating learning environment. Children participate in age-appropriate whole-group, small-group, and individual learning experiences.
Lesson planning is responsive rather than one-size-fits-all. When children show interest in a topic, that interest can become part of books, art projects, conversations, building activities, music, and other learning areas.
For example, a child’s interest in dinosaurs might inspire dinosaur stories, themed artwork, imaginative play, counting activities, and hands-on exploration.
Children are observed regularly so activities can be adjusted to support their progress, address challenges, and build on emerging interests. When families provide an IEP or IFSP, relevant goals can be incorporated into the child’s learning plan.

Children experience the world by touching, seeing, hearing, moving, experimenting, asking questions, and trying new ideas. Our learning environment includes a variety of materials that support different interests, abilities, and developmental skills.
Building blocks, magnetic blocks, stacking toys, boxes, and hands-on materials encourage creativity, planning, persistence, and problem-solving.
Short stories, pictures, conversation, songs, and language-rich activities help children communicate, listen, build vocabulary, and connect with the world around them.
Writing materials, crayons, paint, and creative projects give children opportunities to make choices and express their ideas.
Musical toys, songs, movement, and age-appropriate physical activities support coordination, confidence, and joyful participation.
Children are given opportunities to safely explore materials through touch, sight, sound, and other senses.
Books, music, pictures, stories, and toys can reflect different languages, cultures, traditions, identities, and family backgrounds.
Young children are still learning how to communicate, manage emotions, take turns, solve disagreements, and understand boundaries. At Rise N Shine, guidance is focused on teaching—not punishment.
Children may be offered appropriate choices, redirected toward a safer activity, reminded of expectations through words or visual cues, and guided through age-appropriate problem-solving.
Simple expectations such as “walking feet,” “kind words,” “safe body,” “take turns,” and “gentle hands” help children understand how to care for themselves and others.
We do not use physical discipline or punishment.
Read Our Parent HandbookChildren need a clean, secure, and well-maintained environment in order to play and learn confidently. Safety and healthy habits are incorporated into the childcare space and daily routine.
The environment includes secured areas, covered electrical outlets, non-slip rugs, well-maintained furniture and equipment, safe storage for hazardous materials, and age-appropriate supervision of toys, tools, and activities.
Handwashing is encouraged throughout the day. Tables, surfaces, toys, furniture, and learning materials are cleaned and sanitized to help reduce the spread of germs.
Families are notified when a child develops symptoms that may prevent safe participation in childcare. Children must also meet the program’s immunization requirements before enrollment.
Infant sleeping furniture and arrangements are maintained with infant safety and SIDS prevention in mind.
Rise N Shine supports healthy eating by offering fresh fruits and/or vegetables and whole grains regularly while minimizing excess fat, sugar, and salt. Meals brought from home are monitored and may be supplemented when needed to help children receive a more balanced meal or snack.
Screen time is limited and used only when it is directly connected to a facilitated educational experience.
Children under two do not receive screen time. For older children, any media used must be educational, age-appropriate, and connected to a learning or movement activity.
No screen time for children under age two.
Rise N Shine welcomes children with disabilities and special healthcare needs and does not exclude a child because of a disability.
Families may provide an IEP, IFSP, healthcare information, or other relevant documentation to help us understand the child’s needs and developmental goals.
When appropriate, Rise N Shine can collaborate with service providers, therapists, healthcare professionals, schools, and outside agencies. Activities, routines, learning materials, equipment, or the environment may also be adapted to help a child participate comfortably and successfully.
Parents know their children best. That is why communication and family participation are important parts of the Rise N Shine experience.
Our open-door policy allows parents and guardians to visit during operating hours. Families can observe the environment, see children participating in activities, and better understand how the program supports learning and development.
Parents also receive updates about their child’s progress. Conferences and scheduled conversations provide opportunities to discuss developmental growth, questions, concerns, and next steps.
Starting childcare, moving between activities, and preparing for school can all feel like big changes to a child. Rise N Shine uses predictable routines, communication, and individualized support to make those transitions more comfortable.
A gradual start with shorter initial hours may be used to help a child become familiar with the environment, provider, routines, and other children.
Consistent routines and verbal cues help children understand what is happening now and what will happen next.
Families and receiving schools can be provided with information about the child’s development to support a smoother transition into a new educational environment.
For children with disabilities or special healthcare needs, transition planning may include family meetings, collaboration with professionals, environmental adjustments, adaptive equipment, school visits, or support related to an IEP or 504 plan.
